Nationalpark Thy – Denmark’s Wild West Coast Nature

From Agger Tange in the south to Hanstholm in the north, Nationalpark Thy stretches across more than 240 square kilometres of raw dune heaths, forests, lakes, and the roaring North Sea. It is Denmark’s first national park – and a true paradise for nature lovers, hikers, cyclists, and birdwatchers.

Here, you experience nature as it looked hundreds of years ago: vast open dune landscapes, quiet forest lakes, long trails through plantations, and the constant sound of the sea in the background. The park is home to rare plants and animals, and chances are good you’ll spot red deer, cranes, and birds of prey.

Nationalpark Thy offers countless opportunities for an active holiday in nature. Follow one of the many hiking routes – such as the popular coastal rescue trail – or explore the signposted MTB tracks and gravel paths through forest and dunes. Many of the trails start close to popular holiday home areas like Klitmøller, Vorupør, and Agger.

In the heart of the park lies Klitmøller, known as Cold Hawaii – a mecca for surfers and a cosy village with a lively atmosphere. Also worth visiting are Stenbjerg Landingsplads and Nørre Vorupør, with their iconic boathouses and maritime charm. Here, you can still see fishing boats being pulled up onto the beach – just like in the old days.

In Vorupør, you’ll find the modern National Park Center Thy, where you can get an overview of routes, sights, and activities in the area. There’s also a fascinating exhibition and a large interactive map of the park.
