Mønsted Kalkgruber – The World’s Largest Underground Limestone Mine

As you enter the gruber, you step into a hidden world of winding limestone tunnels deep beneath the surface. Experience captivating light and sound installations that tell the story of limestone mining, and learn about the many bats that hibernate here during winter. The temperature inside the tunnels is a constant 8°C – so remember to bring a warm sweater, even in summer.

From spring to autumn, you can hop on the small mine train from the visitor centre and ride straight into the dark passages of Mønsted Kalkgruber. The ride is a favourite among both children and adults – and a fun way to start your visit. Above ground, you’ll also find an exciting exhibition, a café, and scenic surroundings with panoramic views over the central Jutland landscape.
