Discover Lyngvig Lighthouse – The Iconic Landmark of the West Coast
Lyngvig Lighthouse rises majestically from the rugged dune landscape between Hvide Sande and Søndervig and is one of the most beloved attractions on the Danish North Sea coast. Standing 38 metres tall, the lighthouse was built in 1906 after a tragic shipwreck just offshore, in which the entire crew perished. The lighthouse became a much-needed beacon of safety for sailors navigating the unpredictable waters of the North Sea and has since served as a guiding light for both seafarers and visitors.
Today, Lyngvig Lighthouse stands as a living museum, offering insight into maritime history and breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. Climbing the 228 steps to the top is an experience in itself, and from the lantern room you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the North Sea, Ringkøbing Fjord and the protected dune landscape. On clear days, you can see as far as Søndervig and Thorsminde – and the sunset from the top is nothing short of magical.
Fun and Relaxation for the Whole Family
But Lyngvig Lighthouse is much more than just a climb. At the base of the tower, the whole family can relax and enjoy the fresh sea air. The old lighthouse keeper’s house now hosts a cosy café where you can enjoy homemade cakes, hot and cold drinks, or a light lunch. The museum shop offers local delicacies, books, posters and maritime-themed gifts.
For the little ones, there’s a large nature playground with shipwreck-inspired structures and creative equipment that spark the imagination and tell the story of life by the sea. Here, children can play captain, climb the masts and build sandcastles in the dunes while adults enjoy the view or sip coffee in the sun.
Rappelling From the Top – If You Dare
Looking for a unique and thrilling experience during your holiday? Try rappelling down the lighthouse itself. Every Wednesday from July to October, you can feel the adrenaline rush as you descend the 38-metre-high tower—harnessed and helmeted—under the guidance of professional instructors from Team Nord.
Rappelling is open to anyone aged 14 and up who’s ready to challenge themselves and experience the coastline from a whole new angle. No prior experience is needed—just courage and curiosity. It’s an unforgettable adventure.
