Cold Hawaii – Surf, Sand, and Atmosphere in Klitmøller
Along the rugged coastline of Thy – right in the heart of Nationalpark Thy – lies a string of surf spots collectively known as Cold Hawaii. The most famous is Klitmøller, a former fishing village now transformed into Denmark’s surfing capital. Here, powerful waves draw both beginners and world champions – all in a relaxed setting where sea, wind, and nature take centre stage.
The name Cold Hawaii was born as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the tropical surf paradise of Hawaii – just with wetsuits and westerly winds. Along this stretch of coast, you'll find more than 30 named surf spots from Agger in the south to Hanstholm in the north. The waves are varied and consistent all year, making the area one of the best surf destinations in Europe.
Whether you're new to surfing or an experienced rider, there’s a wave for you. Klitmøller and Vorupør have surf schools, gear rentals, and professional instruction. You can try wave surfing, windsurfing, or stand-up paddleboarding. Many visitors also enjoy just playing in the waves – followed by a warm-up in a sauna or a wild hot tub.
But Cold Hawaii isn’t just about surfing. The laid-back vibe, the welcoming local community, and the spectacular nature make this a favourite spot for anyone who loves the ocean. Cosy cafés, local crafts, beach promenades, fishing boats, and untouched landscapes are all within reach. Walk through the dunes, bike through the national park, or simply enjoy a sunset over the North Sea.
