Abelines Gaard – Experience Life on the West Coast 100 Years Ago

Step into another era and discover what life was like on the Danish west coast in the early 1900s. Abelines Gaard is an authentic, thatched dune farm located just south of Hvide Sande – a must-visit for both children and adults curious about West Jutland’s cultural heritage.

Abeline lived here with her children and continued running the farm after her husband’s death – and her story is vividly told through the museum’s exhibitions, which portray everyday life on the edge of the sea. You can explore the original living rooms, kitchen, sleeping alcoves, and many objects that tell the story of a fisherman's family in a harsh coastal environment.

There’s plenty for kids to enjoy: In the summer months, they can try old-fashioned games in the courtyard, bake pancakes over an open fire, play in the sand, and dress up in clothes from “the old days.” During school holidays, special activities are often arranged – and visitors are always welcome to enjoy a cup of coffee in the cosy courtyard.

Abelines Gaard is just a short drive from Hvide Sande and Søndervig – making it easy to combine a trip to the beach with a step back in time. The farm is part of the Ringkøbing-Skjern Museum and is one of the best-preserved dune farms on the Danish west coast.
